Lane

Lane was a chatterbox as they took the dark, empty highways from Granny Reynolds’ estate back toward Los Angeles. It wasn’t just the wine loosening his tongue — although it was true he’d had more than his fair share, since Roman was driving — but the excitement of the evening.

Lane was a serial dater. He burned through relationships like cheap incense. Most of the time, he was serious about the men he dated — at least for the first few weeks. But once the excitement wore off and the newness turned to monotony, he ended things.

And he’d had his heart broken more than once.

But there was something about the impromptu date in Granny Reynolds’ backyard that sparked inspiration inside of him and lit the fires of his creativity. The kind of love Michael liked to write about, the love that ached deep inside and felt weightless, was starting to make sense to Lane.

There was a giddy kind of excitement, like a kind on Christmas morning, that expanded in his chest and made him want to laugh endlessly. It left him lightheaded and spinning, but in the best way. It tingled down his arms and along his spine and into his lungs.

He’d never felt that kind of pull before. Most of the time, the men he went after were stunning, but were boring as posts on the inside. Often times they shared so little in common that even their looks couldn’t save them.

It wasn’t that way with Roman. Not at all.

Lane didn’t think they had very much in common, but Roman’s willingness to be open and inquisitive about the things Lane did in life more than made up for it. They met each other halfway. Lane had gone hiking, and Roman, he felt, was the kind of guy who’d gladly sit in on Lane’s jam sessions even though he had no clue about music. He was the kind of guy who’d make an effort to be a part of Lane’s life no matter what.

He was the kind of guy who was perfect for Lane.

The kind of guy he’d really marry, if given a chance.

“I didn’t even think I liked éclairs until I tried those ones,” Lane chirped. “I mean, I’m not a huge fan of pastry, you know? It’s kind of dry and crumbly most of the time, and I like cake, really, but that was fantastic. I’m blown away.”

Roman’s hand slipped onto Lane’s thigh, and Lane instinctively slid his hand on top of it. Curiously, Lane looked in Roman’s direction. Roman kept his eyes on the road and one hand on the wheel, but he made it clear he was listening.

“It’s grandmas like your granny that make me regret I never knew my grandparents,” Lane said after some thought. “She didn’t have to do anything like that for us, but she loves you so much that she wanted to do something special for you. I just… I wish that I had love like that, you know? My parents won’t even talk to me anymore.
